Song of Songs 3:1-4 NIVUK
1 All night long on my bed
I looked for the one my heart loves;
I looked for him but did not find him.
2 I will get up now and go about the city,
through its streets and squares;
I will search for the one my heart loves.
So I looked for him but did not find him.
3 The watchmen found me
as they made their rounds in the city.
‘Have you seen the one my heart loves?’
4 Scarcely had I passed them
when I found the one my heart loves.
I held him and would not let him go…
Tim and I have often talked about doing notes based on Song of Songs but have never done so. Song of Songs is a love song, a celebration of physical and emotional love between two people. It has also been seen as a celebration of the love of God for his people, just as Paul talks about marriage pointing towards the love between Christ and his church. We can feel that here, as Solomon talks of longing, searching and satisfaction – don’t we know that in our faith, that sense of longing for God’s Presence, a searching after him and the joy of being with him that eventually results.
Jesus, thank you that you came searching for us and having found us will never let go! May we find you today.
