Proverbs 16:18-19 NIVUK
18 Pride goes before destruction,
a haughty spirit before a fall.
19 Better to be lowly in spirit along with the oppressed
than to share plunder with the proud.

I guess this must be the origin of the saying ‘pride goes before a fall’, the picture that being big-headed makes you top heavy and prone to topple. Reading verse 18 along with verse 19 changes possibly changes how we understand it, however. Together they echo Jesus’ refrain ‘the first shall be last and the last shall be first’, God’s promise of justice for the downtrodden and overlooked. The pride aren’t simply prone to losing their balance, God turns the tables to bring liberation to the oppressed.

Father, thank you that you will put all things right. Show me what it means in my life to side with justice rather than personal gain.
