Psalm 80:8-11 NIVUK
8 You transplanted a vine from Egypt;
you drove out the nations and planted it.
9 You cleared the ground for it,
and it took root and filled the land.
10 The mountains were covered with its shade,
the mighty cedars with its branches.
11 Its branches reached as far as the Sea,
its shoots as far as the River.
Much to my Dad’s disappointment, I don’t have green fingers. I’m skilled at growing dandelions, but little else. Having watched him over the years, however, I do know the dedication, hard work and care that goes into tending a garden, and I’m sure it is the same for a vineyard which is what the Israelites are compared to here in this horticultural retelling of the Exodus. God’s dedication, hard work and care paid off, the vineyard spreading and thriving. Having tended creation and the Israelites, God continues to work the ground as he maintain the church and grow his Kingdom.
Master Gardener, may your Kingdom grow amongst us!
