Acts 15:7-8 NIVUK
7 After much discussion, Peter got up and addressed them: ‘Brothers, you know that some time ago God made a choice among you that the Gentiles should hear from my lips the message of the gospel and believe. 8 God, who knows the heart, showed that he accepted them by giving the Holy Spirit to them, just as he did to us.
Could Gentiles become Christians? This was the big debate in the Early Church. Up until this point, God’s People were solely Jews, indeed they looked upon anyone else as being unclean. But God’s plan was always that his people would be a blessing to the whole world, and he demonstrated this by pouring his Spirit out on them too as they came to faith. Division has often been an issue in the church, perhaps a key lesson from this early dispute is to ask if God has shown that he accepts the other side as shown by giving them his Spirit. If there is evidence of his Spirit’s work in them, who are we to reject them?
