Acts 5:38-39 NIVUK
38 Therefore, in the present case I advise you: leave these men alone! Let them go! For if their purpose or activity is of human origin, it will fail. 39 But if it is from God, you will not be able to stop these men; you will only find yourselves fighting against God.’

Threatened by the activity of the early disciples, the High Priest and his associates decide to put Peter and John to death, but the pharisee Gamaliel advises them not to with the wise words of this passage. It’s surprising how often God speaks through those who stand against him as well as for him. As we focus on our four focuses as a church this year, including mission, it is good to remember that ultimately the work is God’s work, and who can withstand his will!

Lord, we praise you because you are trustworthy and powerful – what you set out to achieve you always achieve.
