John 11:32-35 NIVUK
32 When Mary reached the place where Jesus was and saw him, she fell at his feet and said, ‘Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.’
33 When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who had come along with her also weeping, he was deeply moved in spirit and troubled. 34 ‘Where have you laid him?’ he asked.
‘Come and see, Lord,’ they replied.
35 Jesus wept.
This episode comes from the famous story of Jesus raising Lazarus from the dead and declaring that he is the resurrection and life (25), an episode that reveals most dramatically Jesus’ power. It also contains what I believe is the shortest verse in the Bible, verse 35, which simply says ‘Jesus wept’. These two words in English reveal what lies behind his power, his compassion, his understanding of human life and his sharing and entering into our feelings.
Lord, may I be moved into action by the plight of those I meet as Jesus was with Lazarus’ family and friends.
