John 7:37-39 NIVUK
37 On the last and greatest day of the festival, Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, ‘Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink. 38 Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them.’[a] 39 By this he meant the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were later to receive. Up to that time the Spirit had not been given, since Jesus had not yet been glorified.
All the weather talk at the moment is of the conspicuous lack of rain at the moment – will it be a long hot dry summer like ’76 with water shortages and hosepipe bans? Gardeners are worried about the impact on the plants of the drought. Water is crucial to all life; without it we quickly get in trouble. So it is with the Holy Spirit, the water Jesus promises if we come to him. It is just as vital, refreshing and restoring us, giving us the life that God wants us to live.
Jesus we come to you to drink. Please pour out your Spirit on us.
