4 The rabble with them began to crave other food, and again the Israelites started wailing and said, ‘If only we had meat to eat! 5 We remember the fish we ate in Egypt at no cost – also the cucumbers, melons, leeks, onions and garlic. 6 But now we have lost our appetite; we never see anything but this manna!’
Sometimes we can get so used to the blessings that God gives us that we get used to them. This was certainly the case for the Israelites in this episode. God has rescued them from Pharaoh and is personally leading them into a land of their own. They have no food of their own and so God is graciously providing manna for them, miracle food, without which they would die. And yet they are grumbling, longing for the cucumbers they had back in Egypt back in brutal slavery. Sometimes it is good for us to stop and take stock of what God has given us and done for us so we don’t follow their example and celebrate his goodness rather than taking his generosity for granted.
Take a few minutes to look back on what God has and is doing for you. Give thanks.
