15 On the day the tabernacle, the tent of the covenant law, was set up, the cloud covered it. From evening till morning the cloud above the tabernacle looked like fire. 16 That is how it continued to be; the cloud covered it, and at night it looked like fire. 17 Whenever the cloud lifted from above the tent, the Israelites set out; wherever the cloud settled, the Israelites set up camp. 18 At the Lord’s command the Israelites set out, and at his command they set up camp. As long as the cloud stayed over the tabernacle, they remained in camp.
I love this description of how God’s Spirit led his People as they travelled through the wilderness from Egypt to the Promised Land. Through this cloud, they attuned themselves to him, letting him set their agenda. Jesus led his life in a similar way, claiming that he only did what he saw his Father doing. We may not have the Tabernacle with it’s cloud (the Tabernacle was their portable Temple), nor the special relationship Jesus shared with his Father, but we have the joyful blessing of having the God’s Spirit himself dwell in us – we have become the Tabernacle or Temple.
Lord, like the Israelites, help me to become attuned to your leading.
