21 By day the Lord went ahead of them in a pillar of cloud to guide them on their way and by night in a pillar of fire to give them light, so that they could travel by day or night. 22 Neither the pillar of cloud by day nor the pillar of fire by night left its place in front of the people.
We used to have a sat-nav called Sally (named after the Drop the Dead Donkey character due to the similarity of their voices). Sally had a habit of announcing ‘You have reached your destination’ in the middle of roundabouts, and taking us on random detours. She was never to be trusted to get us to where we were going! Luckily for them, the Israelites in the story of the Exodus were not left to their own navigational skills or led astray by a wayward guide, instead God’s Spirit led them, and through its fire at night no doubt protected them and kept them warm. The good news for us is that we too are led by the Spirit. He never leaves us either, but lives in us, prompting, guiding and shaping us as we seek to live the Kingdom life today and follow Jesus.
Spirit, help me to step in Christ’s footsteps today.
