Mark 12:28-31 (NIV)
28 One of the teachers of the law came and heard them debating. Noticing that Jesus had given them a good answer, he asked him, ‘Of all the commandments, which is the most important?’
29 ‘The most important one,’ answered Jesus, ‘is this: “Hear, O Israel: the Lord our God, the Lord is one. 30 Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.” 31 The second is this: “Love your neighbour as yourself.” There is no commandment greater than these.’
Does Jesus cheat here by giving two answers, two most important commandments? Perhaps, although I think the two are so intertwined they can’t be separated. To love God is to love the people he created and loves. This is why as a church in our model of who we are we have worship as the bulls-eye in a target, surrounded by showing others God’s love in word and deed. What does it mean to love God today? It means to show compassion to those he brings across your path.
Lord, show me how I can love the next person I see today as my worship to you.
