Luke 1:54-55 (NIVUK)
54 He has helped his servant Israel,
    remembering to be merciful
55 to Abraham and his descendants for ever,
just as he promised our ancestors.

We started the Magnificat marvelling that God should be mindful of us at all – why should he care about humanity at all – and this wonderful theme returns at the end of Mary’s song with this celebration of God’s amazing faithfulness. Right towards the start of the Old Testament he promised Abraham that if Abraham followed him, he would become the Father of a great family and nation whom God would bless and through whom he would bless the world. Ever since he has honoured that promise. Never once has he forgotten us (don’t forget, through Christ we are part of Abraham’s family), and even now he is merciful towards us, graciously forgiving us and tenderly loving us.

Standing on this mountaintop
Looking just how far weve come
Knowing that for every step
You were with us
Kneeling on this battle ground
Seeing just how much Youve done
Knowing every victory
Was Your power in us

Scars and struggles on the way
But with joy our hearts can say
Yes, our hearts can say
Never once did we ever walk alone
Never once did You leave us on our own
