Luke 1:51-53 (NIVUK)
51 He has performed mighty deeds with his arm;
    he has scattered those who are proud in their inmost thoughts.
52 He has brought down rulers from their thrones
    but has lifted up the humble.
53 He has filled the hungry with good things
    but has sent the rich away empty.

The mighty acts of kings and rulers in history are usually acts of conquest and expansion. We remember even now the likes of Alexander the Great and the Roman Emperors because of the way they ruled the world. In these verses Mary celebrates the acts of another mighty King, another who has won great victories, bringing down others in great acts of power. Regime change may be an unfashionable phrase right now, but this King is its master. This King, however, is unique. His emphasis is not on occupying the throne, but on caring for the downtrodden, oppressed and unfortunate, caring for those in need.

May your rule be reflected in me today…
