Revelation 2:9 NIVUK
I know your afflictions and your poverty – yet you are rich! I know about the slander of those who say they are Jews and are not, but are a synagogue of Satan.

Life was obviously tough for the church at Smyrna. It would seem that financially they struggled, and to make things worse they had to contend with opposition, particularly from one of the local synagogues who opposed the way Christianity had developed Judaism, claiming it had found its fulfilment on Jesus. Clearly we are not in their shoes – we’re in a different time and place – and yet maybe you have experienced money problems or those who have not understood or taken offence at your faith. I believe that God would say the same to us today as he did to the church at Smyrna, despite all these things, we are rich! Our riches are not in our bank accounts or even the popularity stakes, but they are in something much more enduring, our relationship with God through Jesus, our being adopted as children and given new life in him.

Thank you Father for the security and treasure we have in you!
