Isaiah 43:2 (NIVUK)
When you pass through the waters,
I will be with you;
and when you pass through the rivers,
they will not sweep over you.
When you walk through the fire,
you will not be burned;
the flames will not set you ablaze.
i watched Bear Grylls taking Miranda on an outside adventure the other night after the Bible Study. She did really well, facing her fears of heights and conquering the slopes and obstacles that Grylls laid on for her with his expert help and encouragement. This verse from Isaiah sounds a little like some ultimate obstacle course doesn’t it, passing through water, rivers and even flames! There is an adventurer lurking in me but I’m not sure I fancy that one…
Life can be an obstacle course sometimes, with all sorts of barriers and difficulties to get through. These obstacles can be the making of us, however, as we face them and overcome them, coming out stronger and more determined. The great promise of God here in Isaiah is that no matter what we have to face, he is with us and will bring us through to the other side; his Spirit is the ultimate guide, and that, like the other promises of this week’s notes inspired by Grant’s service on Sunday, is a cause for rejoicing and facing the day with a determined smile on our faces and hope in our hearts.
Lord, give me courage through your Spirit and the joy of overcoming in you today!
