Hebrews 10:39 (NIVUK)
But we do not belong to those who shrink back and are destroyed, but to those who have faith and are saved.
Up until this point Hebrews has been trying to bang home the message that Jesus is superior to everything that has gone before: sacrifices, priests, religion, rituals, laws and so on, in fact all they had considered important. This was not to trash Jewish beliefs, Paul was a Jew and still valued these things, but his point was that in Jesus something even better had come. These others had to be put in place and used again and again, Jesus’ greatness was such that he was sufficient for all their needs. nothing else is needed. If this is the case, then there is no reason why we should be ashamed of him, or not be confident of our status through him. Do not shrink back, but stand tall in your faith and boast in him!
What things do we consider important today? In prayer celebrate that Jesus is even better than these. Commit to standing tall in him today.
