Bible Reading: Deuteronomy 21
21 Then all the men of his town are to stone him to death. You must purge the evil from among you. All Israel will hear of it and be afraid.

I had lots of concerns about including stoning. Why? It’s not something that we have any more.  To many people it is horrific. Then I considered the stone as God; solid, unchanging and resolute. The OT is full of judgement and God is tough, but fair. Many people were brought down, while God’s plan for us worked through it’s course. A plan that led to someone taking all the punishment, as He died on the cross. “All Israel will hear of it and be afraid.” – Do we still fear the living God? (I was once told that it’s OK to substitute the work fear with respect.) Well do we?

Help us to draw close to you, not out of fear, but love and respect. Amen.
