Luke 20:1-2 NIV
One day as Jesus was teaching the people in the temple courts and proclaiming the good news, the chief priests and the teachers of the law, together with the elders, came up to him. “Tell us by what authority you are doing these things,” they said. “Who gave you this authority?”
Having cleared the Temple of obstructions, Jesus begins to teach, and his teaching is as challenging and profound as ever – but don’t forget, it has not been heard in the City before. The religious leaders don’t like it one bit and they challenge him in return by demanding to know what right he has to be doing so. By telling the story in this way, Luke is asking the same question of us, who’s authority do we think Jesus is acting under? What are the implications if we truly believe it is God’s?
