46 Jesus replied, ‘And you experts in the law, woe to you, because you load people down with burdens they can hardly carry, and you yourselves will not lift one finger to help them.
29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.
We live in a culture that is all about demands – target setting, performance related pay, the unspoken rule of working ever longer hours, results tables, the expectation to look, speak and live certain ways. This inevitable drive for more, better, faster may produce results in the short term, but can often leave us feeling inferior, stressed and guilty. Sadly sometimes we can, like the Pharisees, place similar demands on each other and ourselves as Christians. The liberating news of Jesus, however, is that he does not. He simply calls us to follow him, promising to be with us as we do, guiding us by his Spirit and meeting our needs. Rather than endless lists of targets and demands he simply asks us to have faith and to love.
Lord forgive us for the unfair demands we place on each other – help us to accept and share your liberating grace which frees us to love!
