Then he said to them all: ‘Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me.
The demands of the King are that his subjects follow his example. What does it mean to take up your cross? To Jesus’ contemporaries the cross was the death penalty handed out to revolutionaries. What sort of revolution is Jesus calling us to? To Luke’s readers, ourselves included, it became the symbol of Jesus’ sacrificial death, his giving of his life for others. How can we lay down our lives for others today?
Am I brave enough to take up my cross as you took up yours? Give me courage through your Spirit to serve as you served today.
